Nia De Fer was founded by Nuria Costa in 2023.
00. NC: Nia de Fer origins from the Catalan expression "nena de ferro" which means “iron girl”. The project developed from my interest in reinventing knitwear. Which is why I started experimenting with unordinary threads and materials, but also confronting the concept of structure and silhouette, to find new ways. All the pieces are artisanal, and handcrafted in my atelier in Barcelona. I like to work on the editions or unique pieces, to give value to the process and research behind each of them.
00. NC: The most fascinating aspect of my practice is that I never really know how the piece is going to end up looking. The result is always a blend of what lies between the idea and the finished product. I usually start by creating small stich samples, testing different threads and techniques. One selected my favorites, begins the experimentation: I mix, sublimate, match, to give concrete shape to my ideas. Finally, using the moulage technique, I focus on the design. Moulage allows me to work on a tridimensional body, it is exciting.
00. NC: I am very inspired by the women in my family and the everyday scenes that I have experienced. I really like the imperfection and the beauty that lies in these. I am captivated by ancient objects and how they blend into current aesthetics. On the other hand, my mother has transmitted to me her fascination with mythology, which is an important source of inspiration for my work. Sustainability is a fundamental pillar of my work. All the threads and materials I employ are from Barcelona, a few far from my atelier in Gracia. My pieces are completely handcrafted, and for this reason unique. But also, knitwear allows me to work without waste. The production is focused and made to order.
